RETROGAMING FOR EVERYONE

No old console? You can still enjoy retro games.

Original hardware is not mandatory to rediscover classic games. Official re-releases, subscriptions, emulation and dedicated systems make retro gaming accessible on modern hardware, provided you respect the rights attached to the games you use.

01

1. Official re-releases, collections and stores

Many classics are available again as downloads, compilations or remasters on current stores. When a game is still sold, this is usually the easiest option.

2. Nintendo Switch Online: a ready-to-play retro library

Nintendo Switch Online includes classic NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries. The Expansion Pack adds collections such as Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and SEGA Mega Drive; availability can vary by console and subscription.

3. What is emulation?

An emulator reproduces the behaviour of older hardware on another device such as a PC, Raspberry Pi or mini-PC. Emulators are software; games remain copyrighted. Use your own backups, homebrew, free games or files you are legally entitled to use.

RECALBOX

Recalbox: one of the easiest ways to get started

Recalbox is free, open source and designed to make retrogaming accessible without requiring advanced computer skills.

  • You can use Recalbox on your main PC without removing the operating system already installed: prepare Recalbox on a USB stick or USB SSD, boot from it, then remove it to return to the computer’s normal startup.
  • You can also dedicate a Raspberry Pi, mini-PC or compatible older PC to Recalbox if you prefer a separate retrogaming machine.
  • The project supports a very large number of console, computer and arcade systems.
  • Its interface is designed for controllers, with simplified setup and many video tutorials.
  • A legal library can become very large depending on what you own or may legally use.
  • The Recalbox team regularly runs live technical FAQ/support sessions on Twitch during the weekend.

What about other solutions?

Recalbox is not the only option. Batocera is another dedicated retrogaming system; RetroArch is a highly configurable emulation frontend; standalone emulators focus on specific platforms. Read the dedicated guides to compare how they work and find the official links.

Questions fréquentes

Can I play retro games without owning the original consoles?

Yes. Official re-releases, subscriptions and emulation allow games to run on modern hardware. With emulation, use games and backups you are legally entitled to use.

Is Recalbox free?

Yes. Recalbox is free and open source; hardware and storage remain the user’s responsibility.

Can I use Recalbox on my main PC without deleting Windows or my current OS?

Yes. On compatible PCs, Recalbox can boot from a prepared USB stick or USB SSD. As long as you do not install it to the internal disk, the existing OS remains untouched; remove the Recalbox media to boot normally again. You may need to select USB in the boot menu or UEFI/BIOS.

Where can I get help?

Recalbox provides tutorials, community resources and regular live technical FAQ/support sessions on Twitch.
